Unrelated: How would I figure out if my hardware is compatible and has all of the necessary drivers to install Ubuntu? I don’t use file or printer sharing, and it has security and privacy concerns if it’s left enabled Is there some way I can kill both poisons on this system at the same time?
Disabling the Windows Firewall enables File and Printer Sharing and Network Discovery. Disabling File Sharing enables the Windows Firewall. I also figured out what was causing the Firewall/File Sharing problem. Doesn’t make me feel good that that’s the solution, seeing as how SR’s failed on me on a number of occasions in the last couple of months. So I tried an earlier System Restore point, and it worked, and it fixed the problem with my internet connection. I’m so tempted to just sink that time into learning Ubuntu or something else instead. I’ve been a lifelong Windows user, but 8 has given me just as much time troubleshooting problems as it has functioning as it’s suppose to. (Shouldn’t UAC, which I have cranked up to max, prevent these things from changing themselves without the user’s permission?)Įverything was working fine yesterday, everything else on the network appears to be working fine, and no programs were recently installed on the computer in question. An hour later or so, still trying to fix my connection issues, I checked the Action Center again, and found that Windows Firewall had turned itself back on, again, as well as turning back on Network Discovery and File and Printer Sharing. Somewhere in here, I went into the Action Center hoping to stumble across some solution, and while the Action Center in the taskbar was reporting no issues, I noticed that Windows Firewall had (in)conveniently turned itself back on without my permission. I tried using System Restore to roll back two days, but after an hour of my system trying to do that, it rebooted saying there was some kind of failure in the restore process and my files have not been restored. I tried running some command prompt lines that were suggested in threads elsewhere for similar issues, renewing ip, I can’t remember the exact commands off the top of my head, but it didn’t help. I noticed I’m being given a local IP of, and that’s a problem. Using the ethernet cable allows me to connect using other devices. So I tried using the wireless adapter instead. Troubleshooting leads me to “Ethernet doesn’t have a valid IP configuration”. Today, however, I was unable to connect to the internet. Since my last post here ( ), I refreshed my OS, reinstalled Comodo, and everything seemed to be working fine for about a week.
